At the mall yesterday w/ my mom, we’re sitting at a communal table in the food court. She and I were speaking in our language, Gujarati, the family to our left were speaking Japanese and the family to our right, Spanish. It was so beautiful. 1/

This felt amazing to read (that warm blanket of shivers that starts at the base of your neck and radiates down). For many years I was so embarrassed when my parents spoke something besides English in public. Now I love it. The future can be scary, but it also looks beautiful.

Absolutely. Another thing that's nice about the immigrant mix in the area: kids singing happy birthday in their parents' language after the English happy birthday at parties (Farsi, korean, arabic, etc)
