Honestly, I didn’t really want to step in to defend a white woman for many reasons, especially with all of these white people on this train who could do it. But no one was stepping in, so I did it. 4/

I walked towards the guy and said “you need to relax before there’s a real issue, step back and leave her alone.” He didn’t respond and turned around. She looked at me and then put her head down. I turned around and was about to put my headphones back on. 5/

The woman looks at him and mumbles under her breath, he then jumps in her face and says “you fucking bitch I’ll beat your ass on this train!” I jump in between them go chest to chest with him and say “I’ll break your jaw if you touch her. Flex on me since you’re tough.” 6/

He doesn’t say anything and turns around and puts his head down. I continue to stand between them so he can try anything. The blonde woman looks at me in disgust and puts her head down, says nothing, and turns around. 7/

A Middle Eastern near us looks at me woman says loudly “since she won’t say anything, I’ll say thank you for that.” The blonde woman puts her head up looks at the woman and says “I don’t need a Black man to help me”. The woman looked shocked but said nothing back. 8/

After about a few seconds the Middle Eastern woman looks at me and mouths “sorry” without actually saying anything out loud. Almost as if it had to be a secret that this white woman just said something disgustingly racist. I didn’t respond and continued to stand there. 9/

What was I supposed to do? Yell at the white woman I just defended? Argue with her? Give her the opportunity to call the police on me? I felt small, tiny, helpless and most importantly dumb. I looked over and the white guy had heard everything and was laughing to himself. 10/

None of the white men on the train defended her, none of the white women, and it was her own mind ready to put hands on her. But she chose to humiliate and disrespect the one person who wanted to help her, because I’m Black. 11/

This isn’t the exception, and white women who aren’t as problematic and racist need to stop thinking it is if they want to actually make change in their community.

It’s very interesting that many of the responses to this thread have basically been “should have known and it’s your fault.” My fault for not standing by and watching a woman potentially get beat up by a man?

You did the right thing but in a white supremacist society that will not be acknowledged. It’s sad that this woman could not just be decent.
