Just received peer review comments for a special issue on teaching race in med/em that I have an article in and apparently they refused to read the essays because the topic is too political and offensive. This is what we are dealing with folks. #ShakeRace

I’m appalled. I’m glad that this journal has such a thorough review process, and I applaud them for not hiding this hateful, unprofessional nonsense from the contributors. Thank you for sharing it with us here. I look forward to reading this work.

I also appreciate the journal's transparency and the fact that they asked so many people to review. That might be because it's interdisciplinary but in this case it offered a buffer from this person's inability to get over themselves and their own politics.

And, as you pointed out in your original tweet, a window into what many of us are up against.

These kinds of biases are real and they affect where our work is placed and if institutions put a premium on “top” journals and those journals have reviewers like this, then it’s a huge problem. These kinds of reviewers also sit on fellowship committees.

2/ It isn’t a “bias” to prefer widely accepted standards that reject teaching political assertions as if students are to consider them facts. That is professionalism. If you are simply discussing it as a political concept, that’s fine — but your tweets don’t make that clear.

Knowledge is not produced from an objective locus of enunciation. To suggest that is naive. Some of us walk into the classroom already bearing the weight of racist ideologies. It must be nice to live in a world where you think that doesn’t apply. 1/

Knowledge isn’t produced with empty extra syllables like “objective locus of enunciation,” which sounds like a locus of obfuscation, which leads me to believe you’re perpetrating an academic griftification. That is: ya lyin’ lady.

Actually that’s exactly how it’s produced, as you made clear in your first post about agreed upon rules and standards. Again, thanks for your participation.pic.twitter.com/v3C5lUAuNZ
