I am so impressed with how your students tackled the play. How wonderful. And embracing themselves as actors? That’s just marvelous. I started thinking about how I remove myself as I read Shakespeare sometimes and how I should stop that! Your students already know not to! Yes!

They really are an impressive bunch, staying with the class even after finding out what we were going to do. We were all scared but I think that helped us be brave and tackle this play. 1/

This is a wonderful article! I am no literary expert by any means, but the fundamental points you’re making about the “redeploying” of potentially damaging ideologies is a timely one, and I find the thought of locally “inflected” interpretation of works fascinating. Thank you.

Also, I feel like this article really needs to reach as wide an audience as possible. Have you considered publishing it somewhere somehow? Again pardon my ignorance in this subject area, I just thought it was really intrinsically interesting.

Absolutely inspiring! Examining Shakespeare's plays through students' own experiences & those of the people around them invites students to own the language & make the plays relevant to the here & now.

What fostered even more investment and connection was that this was totally student led, with students editing the script, directing the show, to designing costumes. They were able to make the show theirs and say what they wanted to with it.
