We agreed to assume best intentions and be generous in our reactions to everyone. As the training progressed however, this same woman then did the thing she feared, repeatedly, and expected to be allowed to keep doing that. 2/

In retrospect, that first comment was a cover for her to not be held accountable by the group. I share this because I encounter this often in academic spaces. People don’t want to put in the labor of race work 3/

But expect to have a platform from which they can speak with authority and not be challenged. When they are, they exhibit the worst white fragility reactions of rage, tears, and pain, centering themselves rather than the problem of racism. 4/

Thus our legitimate critiques turned into tone policing and personal attacks because they could not imagine that their words were complicit in various forms of white supremacy and dominance. Thank god we had amazing facilitators. 5/5

In the diversity work I do w my students, I encourage a co-creation of guidelines for inclusive discussion, & this idea often surfaces in some form. I allow it, but add that we must (compassionately) *hold ourselves & each other accountable* if we are ever to transform our world

I do this too. This person was trying to game that system so that they didn’t have to do the work of learning and reflecting. It reminded me of how people want to engage in these conversations without consequence, making it unsafe for others.
