Yes. There was such a push in the early 2000s to make pre-18thC early moderns into the "good guys" but Orientalism has always been there. It's in Roman literature. And interestingly you find it also in early modern depictions of Rome, from Spenser onwards.
Absolutely. And it’s not a static discourse that hold the same ideological valence throughout history. It’s as incoherent sometimes as racial discourse, but to only engage with it superficially leaves your work open it unwittingly falling into it.
