Good grief!
I wasn't going to say anything, & I get the frustration, as well as the familiar practice among academics--but this is where public shaming leads. 1/2 my twitter feed is people anxious @ writing--so how does this help anyone? Why not a private note to the author, if want to help?
Let’s be fair: A&C absolutely sets up a binary between Egypt and Rome and the play is full of racism against Egyptians. That said, I personally think it sets up the binary in order to critique it at every turn!
It don’t dispute that at all. The critique is when you argue against that but unwittingly reinscribe it.
To be fair, the essay is talking about Shakespeare's depictions of Romans in Antony and Cleopatra. Both Romans and Egyptians are terrible stereotypes in the play. Perhaps to make the English feel better about themselves.
