I think yes & no. Because the ideology of "universality" carries w/it an "open door policy" Shakespeare can be appropriated by anyone thus canceling the claims of ownership. It is the dilemma, IMO, with the notion of universality.

This is the flaw in white supremacy's take on Shake. He can't be both universal & exclusive, which still governs the teaching of Shakespeare.

Exactly. Also the conservative view is given the legitimacy of universality and the liberators is particular and presentist and therefore discounted by gatekeepers.

Just chiming in to say it's causing me acute anxiety to have "very happy to insist that Shakespeare has been a pure force of good" attributed to me.

I’m not being snarky here, but the tenor of your thread was that ultimately Shakespeare is a “force for progress.” What many folks who occupy marginalized identities pointed out is that this is a claim that does not account for us now or historically.

Well put. The initial post was askew in presenting a "hypothesis" (rather than question), and gave unequal representation to evidence for and against. Was designed to put some pressure on the idea, and that's what happened. Grateful for that.

Still interested in a sincere look at the totality of evidence, acknowledging that might be a fool’s errand. Temperamentally, I’m opposed to concluding that it’s complicated, mixed, contradictory, and that’s that. But that might be where it ends up.

Totality of evidence to prove that Shakespeare is progressive? (Sincere question)

That’s a dissertation topic. Again, I have to come back to the usage his texts are put to— can be used progressively or conservatively. We see this. Shakespeare progressive?...no. Margo Hendricks

Agree. IMO, the plays we look at to point to Multicultural Shakespeare or #ShakeRace are actually pretty bleak about those identities. Just look at Othello reception history. It’s those who challenge that messaging that make them “progressive.”
