This is a helpful thread. I’m directing the play (at a high school) starting next week and am struggling with Caliban. (The desire to represent his oppression but not forgive his attempted rape of Miranda.) I’ll be listening! Thanks, both.

The attempted rape of Miranda is a difficult one. While I don’t try to minimize it, I do point out that in the ecosystem of the island it does make sense that Caliban would think that Miranda would be his mate. After all, she can’t marry her father.

It’s so hard. Prospero’s command over the language that Caliban and Miranda use makes it hard to know what “Violate the honor” means and to what extent Prospero interpreted the encounter for them.

Absolutely! In the past I have had to do more defending but by the time we get to The Tempest students are ready and able to see the white supremacy at work. In performance, you can’t anticipate that from audience. You have to make different decisions.

Yes. So: how to communicate that without causing all sorts of other problems? (Especially that of minimizing rape?) Or can we trust an audience to manage conflicting feeling?

Ha! Unfortunately I’m both a beginning director and a half-baked academic, so I’m in a weird space here. There are so many possibilities here but as I always preach when I teach my classes, performance has to collapse possibility to reality...

You know this bit every show is a possibility. If you have a clear interpretation for the show overall and every scene is emphasizing that then you will have realized your aim. We did a talk back with the audience and they said we made them uncomfortable. 1/2

My students responded that this was their intention. No one should be comfortable with anti Semitism and racism. I was so proud.
