Racists and classists have often seen Shakespeare as their enemy, as in Thomas Rymer’s attack on Othello, or Delia Bacon’s claim a commoner like Shakespeare couldn’t have written those plays.

Shakespeare set the stage for the earliest black actors in Britain, Ira Aldridge and James Hewitt. Shakespeare was at the center of the “civic gospel” of George Dawson, who called the playwright “the meeting point of all races.”

Aldridge had to go to England because he could not perform in the US, and the reviews of his Othello were racist. I think more structural and nuanced analysis of the gatekeepers of Shakespearean culture is necessary here. #ShakeRace
