The system of chattel slavery that existed in America & other European colonies is unlike slavery that existed in ancient world. Folks have tweeted at me in recent days about slavery being a widespread practice. That's a common way to downplay unique brutality of chattel slavery.

Roman slavery in particular was tho, no? And helots in Sparta were similar. I don’t care about those examples for reparations b/c they don’t affect modern people, and racism is a whole ‘nother thing. But those two slavocracies seem similar otherwise

Roman slavery I know was different in the sense that ancient authors talked about marking them out in some way to make it more obvious who was enslaved and who not, while the counter argument was that then they’d realize how many of them there were compared to free people

They weren’t all galley slaves and it wasn’t a race based system. No one is making the argument that slavery was good or humane in the Med or classical world. I am simply pointing out the obvious difference in the ways it was implemented.
