A teaching tip: Make sure when a student speaks in class that everyone can hear them. Train them to speak loud enough to be heard and for others to be quiet. EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. Else the other students quickly learn they can tune out whenever another student speaks.

How do you do this with a student who clearly is super shy and self-conscious. I do this usually, but I have one this semester who I think will cry if I tell her to speak up. Help!

[1/3] I'm guessing you've already tried encouraging the student (or class) that participation in academic discourse is an important area of growth. Maybe some reassurance that the student has something important to say? E.g. if they do any pre-writing, you could ...

[2/3] ... share something this student wrote with the class (with attribution or not, depending on how you think the student will react, or maybe you get permission). That might help the student realize that they have something important to contribute.

[3/3] If the student is physically unable to speak up, but still participates, you may have to revoice the student's words. ("I think I heard you say that... do others agree with that statement?") p.s. this makes me think about speaking up during HMC faculty meetings... :)

The latter is what’s happening here. The student likes to participate but is so soft spoken I can barely hear her. I will have to try this technique.

I have a student like this in my class. I had to make it a grade for the kids to present something. You can also use the Recap app so they can record themselves in the comfort and privacy of their own device and you can watch the responses or show them in class.

http://Letsrecap.com lets T set up questions for Ss to videotape their answers. Helps kids to explain things out loud. I love it. Gets my more shy kids to speak and let's me see what they can articulate.
