A teaching tip: Make sure when a student speaks in class that everyone can hear them. Train them to speak loud enough to be heard and for others to be quiet. EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. Else the other students quickly learn they can tune out whenever another student speaks.

I let students write their answers first, then discuss with a peer, then write on the board. By the time they are speaking in class, they are well prepared and confident in what they have to say.

I agree with all of these strategies. I also usually ask the kid who is talking or not listening if they heard what the quiet one said. When they say no, then I ask the quiet one to please repeat it louder. It helps both kids understand that I want them to speak and listen.

I have a student like this in my class. I had to make it a grade for the kids to present something. You can also use the Recap app so they can record themselves in the comfort and privacy of their own device and you can watch the responses or show them in class.

What is the Recap app?
