The Western canon is a mine of human experience that forbade most minorities and women from ever entering it. One realises these jewels of expression were blood diamonds, written in the midst of empires.

I guess the point I was trying to make -- clumsily and with a mixed metaphor -- is that the Western canon, like the crown jewels, comes from a vile place, but the jewels are the most beautiful we have. And that their good ended up outlasting the bad, and helping to undermine it.

If the point is that we can whitewash the violence that resulted in these beautiful artifacts so that we can continue to reign them, then you continue to marginalize minorities and women.
