This entire thread, but this part and what follows really resonated with me. The investment in exclusivity in academia is a large part of the problem.

In a recent article in the university newsletter, one of the administrators of a program remarked that she'd gone to a big university where for the first year she didn't have classes with "legitimate professors". Made me feel terrible as merely a Lecturer on our campus!

Hold the phone. An admin at YOUR university, where they employ contract faculty made the distinction between real and not real(what does that even mean?) professors. That’s awful. I hope someone took them to task. You are a real professor.

Yes! In a story about encouraging students to join a "research club"! The implication being, I suppose, that those of us who primarily teach freshman or lower division classes aren't "legitimate" professors. I have a PhD like anyone else who is "legitimate"!

You have a PhD, you teach, you have an active research agenda. The only reason your job is not TT, is because your institution won't invest in TT lines. Also, we graduated at the worst time, and the market has not recovered from that. Eff that $hit.
