I'm interested in what you see as the difference between precarity and scarcity because at some points in the podcast it seemed as though you were talking about the latter rather than the former.

So I've been pondering this (and
@dbkimbro may jump in as well), and my initial response would be that scarcity is about resources/opportunities, whereas precarity is ontological (at least as we're thinking about it).2 vastausta 0 uudelleentwiittausta 3 tykkäystä -
Exactly. Scarcity in academia (which may very well just be endemic because it’s the condition of many workforces) makes the condition of precarity work better. If you’re up against 200 other applicants for a contingent position, how likely are you to fight back against precarity?

And those numbers are just growing. When one year VAP positions get over 100 applications, you know that something is broken. It also fosters unhealthy competition among those who should be allies, like grad students, just finished PhDs, etc. 1/

Not to mention the anxiety in you as a candidate. Am I good enough? Why don’t I have att job yet? I’ve been in the market so long, will I even be a viable candidate? All these questions undermine our confidence and our work.

And the nature of contingent work makes achieving “viability” as a TT candidate that much harder. It’s much more difficult to obtain research/conference travel resources as contingent faculty. Writing is difficult on a 5/5 with extensive travel.

Absolutely. My contingent position was exceptional in every way, given my teaching load, salary, and funding but similar in the anxiety it produced every April when I didn’t know if I would be rehired, which then reproduced itself when I was on the market.
