And the nature of contingent work makes achieving “viability” as a TT candidate that much harder. It’s much more difficult to obtain research/conference travel resources as contingent faculty. Writing is difficult on a 5/5 with extensive travel.

Absolutely. My contingent position was exceptional in every way, given my teaching load, salary, and funding but similar in the anxiety it produced every April when I didn’t know if I would be rehired, which then reproduced itself when I was on the market.
