Academic-job-market query: if a job is listed as period-based, how much of your research and teaching need to be in that period to be a reasonable applicant for the position?

This is a good question! I don’t know if there’s a percentage breakdown or anything, but if a committee is reviewing an application and they don’t feel confident the candidate has the experience working with the subject matter, they won’t make it far in the process.

My first time out, I applied to Film Studies positions, as I had some background with film, but it wasn’t primary (not quite a period but I think similar). But because the majority of my research/all of my teaching wasn’t film, I wasn’t at all competitive for those positions.

That's helpful to hear. I'm trying to weigh similar questions myself. As someone who has worked across periods, I feel like a certain amount of my work is always going to be outside of the parameters of what's listed, so it can be hard to discern when I'm *too* far outside.

For first jobs, I think what you wrote your diss on is what you will be seen as qualified for in the eyes of your reviewers.
