It’s not just your institution. I think it’s useful to think about who /what is making the distinction. For political community/individual research we need to be visible to each other in that Stuart Hall sense

But many institutions, including some granting organizations l, do not count E. Asians as underrepresented minorities because they are frequently heavily represented in the sciences/Math/Econ and don’t look at nuances of field.

Absolutely. It also erases distinctions between Asians, and treats our community as a monolith, which means that those within our communities that need resources and help will not get it because we are a "model minority."
