Sound on! My last three weeks condensed into 1 minute. From lowland impacted wetlands to alpine lakes. This is ⁦⁩ research focusing on wetland ecosystems, climate change and landscape evolution. ⁦⁩ in action

2/2 Initial results are in using X-rays. Still have to try some filters on the raw data, but as happens sometimes the x-rays don’t seem to be providing the penetration and contrast we need. Will the synchrotron come to the rescue???

1/2 Watch this space! We have started using the techniques available to attempt to look inside this New Zealand penguin fossil to make a 3D model and 3D print the bones. X-rays, Synchrotron and neutrons.

Twitter folks - anyone know Isobel Latimer from Tasmania? I found something of hers in Sydney and want to return it. Was going to hand it in but she might be heading back to Tassy. Thanks!

David Attenborough: “During the dry season, over half a million terns crowd onto this remote atoll in the Indian Ocean” Me: Don’t say it, Don’t say it, Don’t say it....... Me: 🎵 There is a season, tern, tern, tern 🎵 Everybody: 🤦‍♀️ 🤦‍♂️

Looking out from our balcony to see a gang of 15 teenagers on the warpath yesterday. Some armed with...... golf clubs. Police siren and then they scatter, dropping the clubs. Wonder if someone’s parents are short a few clubs now?

An early one for sure has an eye for fossils! It’s only a matter of time before he discovers something else amazing.

Here is day 1 of the hike and I recently did along the North Canterbury coast. Even with sleeping on a stony beach, it was a great fossil adventure!

The things we do for fossils. Some hazards of navigating the New Zealand coast looking for marine vertebrates with Surf and flooded sea caves. Timing of the tides meant we had to move near high tide, but had to wait an hour for the cave to empty a bit.

This is one of the first introductions of Monterey pine (Pinus radiata) in New Zealand on the Mount Peel Station, Canterbury, planted in 1859. It is about 45m in height and 3m in diameter, and a truly spectacular tree.

Update. My comment on a paper about early European impact in Australia was published in August, then “temporarily removed” without warning. Journal apologized I wasn’t informed. Author of original paper asked for it to be removed until their reply can be published with it.

At Sydney airport about to start part 2 of my journey to NZ for Xmas. 2 km visibility - max. Should be 10 km plus. Observations: smoke, smoke (and more smoke?)

1st part of my journey to spend Xmas in New Zealand with my family. A smokey train trip through Sydney. Doesn’t look bad in this footage but it is. Stay safe Sydney......

It looks inevitable that the fires either side of the Blue Mountains will merge, which is… not good. And if that big fire SW of Sydney crosses the Hume Hwy it will burn through to the coast. Holsworthy, Heathcote/Royal NPs haven’t burned for a long time… 😱🔥

Checked on a comment paper I recently submitted to see if the authors had replied. Found my comment paper has been “Temporarily Removed” without any warning. Anyone else had this happen?

Bush fires can release as much energy as an atomic bomb. Made me think of the firefighters and it is like fighting a nuclear explosion, happening in slow motion...... with water. They need more support from the Australian government - NOW.

Como Pleasure Grounds, Sydney, Australia. Not the hotbed of hedonism and debauchery you might think (or is that just me 😂). Nice place for a walk though
