As a physician, I am well aware of the lack of mental health parity in our system. But a focus on mental health implies that we have significantly higher rates of mental health issues than other countries with lower gun violence rates. We do not. The difference is access to guns.

And as a physician, you know that mental health problems are diverse and complicated. We have woefully fragmented mental health services in this country. It needs to improve.

Right. I’m not saying mental health is main cause of gun violence. I’m saying it wouldn’t hurt to fix it.
