Those who answered my question were way off. One person thought we spent 30% of our federal budget on aid to those living in extreme poverty! The answers revealed both a lack of understanding of what we do when we help others and how much we spend on it. 3/

The correct answer at the time: less than 1% of our budget was being spent on relieving global extreme poverty. The 1 part of that answer is part of the basis of the ONE campaign, something I’ve been a supporter of for years. 4/

The ONE campaign is a worldwide effort led by Bono and other celebrity philanthropists. The purpose of the campaign is to get the 8 countries with the highest GDPs to increase their spending on global extreme poverty to 1% of their budgets. Think about that. 5/
