The reason was to free up resources for those who were getting seriously ill from COVID.
Same idea.
We need as many people as possible vaccinated against flu so that doctors, nurses, & hospitals continue to have the capacity needed to treat those who get seriously ill.

We need fewer sick people so that we have ventilators available for flu and COVID sufferers who need them.

We need fewer cases of flu so we don’t use up all our PPE trying to figure out who has flu vs. who has COVID, because until we have test results back, we will have to assume COVID and use our dwindling supplies of PPE.
