This article from one of the premier medical journals in America is stunning for a variety of reasons. I encourage you to read the whole thing. Two points stand out to me: 🔹 “Because as the Covid-19 pandemic so expeditiously illustrated, all policy is health policy.” 1/4https://twitter.com/mbeharrymd/status/1271838721730625539 …

This is something I’ve talked about at length. As a physician, my training perfectly positions me to address myriad policy issues *beyond* our broken healthcare system. 2/4

That this publication is advocating for Universal Healthcare using a Single Payer system is a seismic shift within medicine. That has been my position *for more than a decade.*. That is how you know I will fight for this when I’m elected: because I’ve *shown* you my work. 4/4

Hi! Yes, the VA has a lot of problems. But it’s actually a “single provider” system rather than a “single payer” system. The difference being that under single provider, all facilities are owned and operated by the government, and all providers and support staff are employees of

my own building, employed my own staff and kept my facilities well-maintained and clean. I didn’t have to answer to anyone about how I ran my business. That’s the difference between single-payer and single provider.

The point I was trying to make is that the single payer system I’m advocating for is not *also* a single provider. Doctors will continue to be independent contractors who will be paid by the government and but not employed by them. It’s a system like Canada’s, not like the U.K.

The UK system is the closer analogy to the VA, while the Canadian system is closer to Medicare type single payer.

Sadly, tweets are not the best form of communicating complex issues such as healthcare policy. But as an activist on this issue for more than a decade, my overall bottom line is actually something different: Universal Coverage in whatever form we can get passed.
