Patients, please I beg you, don’t mention politics during our 10-15 minute appointment. It makes things feel weird and gross, regardless of your political views. We have 2 minutes of small talk, just tell me about the yard work you have planned this weekend & we’ll call it a day

It sure does, that doesn’t mean I want to discuss what is or isn’t “fake news” during a 15 minute appointment when we need to discuss glaucoma or cataract surgery
-
That’s too bad and I’m sorry you’ve had bad experiences with these discussions. I’ve been having them for years during my 15 minute appointments and find them very rewarding.

Please explain to me the politics of manual rectal disimpaction.
-
1. The availability of fiber rich foods to people of low income is political. 2. The ability of the elderly to have high quality care in nursing homes and assisted living is political. 3. Coverage for medications and treatment for fecal impactions is political.

I’ve had patients raise politics when they were trying to see if I was a safe place for a reproductive health topic, especially when I worked in a more conservative part of the country.

Does it define appointment time? Health management?
-
Yes. Politics defines which insurance companies and how many are available in your area which impacts health management, and this defines how you are paid and reimbursed, which impacts the number of appointments you need to have in a day to get paid and meet overhead.
