Before You Put On That Mask I get it. You want to do *anything* you can to prevent the spread of this virus to you and your loved ones. But before you put it on, PLEASE keep the following in mind: (10 points)

      1. Most importantly, wearing a mask does not in any way substitute for staying home. Staying home is BY FAR the best thing you can do to slow the spread of the virus. Do not think that you can now do non-essential activities because you are wearing a mask. Stay home.

      2. There is no evidence that “mask-wearing countries” have lower rates of spread *because of* mask wearing. The countries that socially wear masks also instituted robust testing and isolation protocols, as well as widespread adherence to stay at home directives. Some even

The debate and confusion about masks for #COVID19 just got some real and important data from a rigorous randomized trial in patients with coronavirus (and influenza). They work. https://www.nature.com/articles/s41591-020-0843-2 … @NatureMedicine pic.twitter.com/YDvsTSPbpE

Point of order, this research specifically examines the cases of exhalation from symptomatic individuals - not masks on healthy individuals. Meaning what Dr. Mann has said in this thread is still consistent with the research.

Ugh. Estimates on asymptomatic cases are 10 to 50% and they don't know they are asymptomatic so we are all potentially asymptomatic and we should all act like it by wearing a damn mask if we go out in public.pic.twitter.com/eUGHWC9G4P

This is the most asinine thing I have ever seen. You do EVERYTHING that the highest performing countries are doing because you DON'T KNOW in real time which measures are most effective including mask use. These conversations more irresponsible than superspreaders.pic.twitter.com/ojJxnYlZ1w

If EVERYONE is potentially asymptomatic because our government is NOT TESTING, NOT CONTACT TRACING and NOT QUARANTINING properly, then ABSOLUTELY EVERYONE needs to be wearing masks. You will be directly responsible for deaths if you advise otherwise.pic.twitter.com/5w6KyBoMLb

Please inform the WHO and the Infectious Disease Society of America of your concerns that they disagree with the general public wearing masks. I haven’t told anyone not to. I’ve told them how to do it correctly, and what other steps they need to take to stay safe.

We have no idea how many mild or asymptomatic cases there are out there and we are failing horribly at testing in the US. Is it twice the tested population? Or more because the tested population only reflects severe infections. No one is trying to give people false security.

You said yourself that masks should be used by sick people. What then would you recommend with a high prevalence of asymptomatic cases?
