Let’s first remember a few points.
Seeking asylum is legal.
Migrants have due process and equal protection rights.

We have protested, offered free flu vaccines for detainees, sent requests for meetings to @CBP and demanded proper care for migrants.

About 30 minutes before our planned non-violent direct actions, we got an email back from @CBP agreeing to meet with representatives from our group to discuss our concerns.

If all we do is demand humane treatment/open immigration, we ignore the fact that owners exploit undoc. workers, pitting their desperation against residents’ demands for better wages & working conditions. Employers r now designating migrants as contract labor 2 evade e-verify.
Agree. But as physicians, our first and foremost consideration is humane treatment under the current, messed up system. As a (hopefully) soon-to-be member of Congress, I’ll be tackling the whole immigration issue.
