I’ve been supporting Universal Healthcare with a Single Payer system since 2009, lobbied at the Texas State Legislature in support of the Healthy Texas Act, a SP system for Texas during the most recent session. In short: I’ve been working on this issue for more than a decade.

I’ll answer publicly: I see this problem first hand in my practice regularly. It is shameful that we haven’t invested in solving this. First step: legalize marijuana. No one should need permission to use a safe substance. Fix our mental healthcare system. Invest in the VA and

If you’re asking if I prescribe chronic opioids to people who need them, the answer is yes. Always have and always will. The other side of the coin is providing services to those who do become addicted. Our healthcare system is wholly inadequate in providing these services.

To lack of research and funding for both better pain medication options to better treatment for habituation. It’s a systems problem that dies not get adequate attention or funding.

To misguided policies that tie physician’s hands and put them in the position of standing in the way of adequate treatment. To law enforcement and medical board complicity. It’s all bad.
