The article references *oral* polio vaccine, which is not used in the US. The medical community has always known that oral vaccine can cause polio in rare cases, which is why most countries use the injectable, killed version, which cannot cause polio. 1/2

But in much of the developing world, we rely on volunteer organizations and tribal communities to vaccinate, and the oral version is the least expensive, most efficient way to do that. So, the risk is there, but is outweighed by the benefits. 2/2
