OTC pills are not covered by insurance. The moment you make oral contraception OTC you remove access for many patients who need it, especially lower income folks who benefit from the pill being available at 100% first dollar coverage.

To be clear, I’m in favor of providing a full range of contraceptive access, including long-term methods for women, especially low income women. The intent of my tweet was to dispel the notion that birth control pills are too dangerous for women to have direct access.

I think "behind the counter" is the way to go, except we have religious and moral exceptions for pharmacists. I worry that without accurate basic sex ed for young people, OCPs could be more dangerous or misused. 18 and up, I'm all for it!
