I was just accused of misandry because I chose to circumcise my sons, and do not equate male circumcision with FGM - this on a thread about the NYT article on the special #misogyny of #childbirth. I am blocking the #trolls but felt this would be an appropriate responsehttps://twitter.com/tnicholsmd/status/1080282950418092032 …

it is not child abuse nor misandry to do a circumcision. I don't care what the "intactitve" movement wants to couch it as. I would still make the same choice today as I am Jewish.

Dr. London I understand you have to snap people out of their tendency to follow the male narrative when discussing women/girls issues, so throwing circumcision/MGM into an FGM discussion gets pushback even though it’s the same issue (legally as well). ..

MGM is woven nicely into the cultural fabric and we don’t recognize it for what it is; the same thing we’re trying to get those who practice FGM to see. There’s no need/reason to proactively cut into a baby’s genitals. It’s a maladaptive practice.

men find many reasons to be resentful. I get it. I did not come on to twitter to discuss it. I started a thread about WOMEN and CHILDBIRTH and sexual difficulties. I am NOT an expert on men and their penises.

I'm against both. But, if cutting off healthy genital tissue, for essentially no medical benefit and mostly religious based, is okay for boys. Then why shouldn't we allow cutting off some from females too? Why don't you see mgm the same as fgm?

I like how you didn't even answer the question. You do know there were studies that showed smoking tobacco had health benefits too, right? If parents want to cut off some female genitals because of religion, then they should be able to.

If you’re doing a cost benefit analysis for proactively cutting the genitals of an infant ..pain, risk of infection, removing delicate, sensitive (functional) tissue..against easier cleaning. Are you against all forms of FGM? Even the ones less invasive than circumcision?

B/c cases against FGM are being dismissed b/c they’re less invasive and for religious purposes. Please watch the talk I sent you in previous response. It gets into the legal issues.
