When physicians ran medicine, there were no insurance companies or government payments. That isn't what you are asking for, you want insurance companies and taxpayers to pay for whatever you decide.

that is not true

Which sentence isn't true?

It was a narrow window. Health insurance really only took off WWII, and remained heavily fee for service. The 80s were great for Doctors - my ob/gyn wife made bucks - with wide health insurance and few cost controls. By the 90s, insurance companies were good at cost control.

They make a huge profit. Take them out of the equation. People die because of their profit-based decisions. What's your problem?
-
Health insurance profits are 6 billion, total health spending is 3 trillion. For every dollar we spend, 2 tenths of a cent goes to insurer profit. Non profits and governments make the same cost benefit analysis. Profit is not the problem.

CEO salaries, needless added cost from "administrative overhead" adds hugely to cost. Physician salaries have been flat for decades the added cost is all the new administrators.

Exactly Cathleen, and we demand
#MedicareForAll. Eliminate health ins co's, ensure MD's Nurses, Administrators, Custodians, all who add value to the service of medical care are well paid. Cover everyone with reliable steady care. -
Administrators do not add value
-
Okay I know you're the expert. Some paperwork has to be done though. Isn't the necessary record keeping adding value? Sincere question and thanks.

Completely agree, but if you’re a member of the AMA then you need to address those lobbying interests first...

I joined half way through last year for the first time - at the behest of women friends trying to change it from the inside.

Nice! Looking forward to see the changes

We need to stop behaving as if healthcare is a consumer product (like lawnmowers and lattes) only for the wealthy and not the human right that it actually is.

Again, as one of the billion people in the rich western world who's not American, we remain in shock that health care remains private in the US, in the face of your unhealthier lives, lower life expectancy, and unbelievable cost.

I include this phrase in an apologetic response to patients on a daily basis: “healthcare has become a business with nonclinicians making the major decisions.” Then I try to make some type of amends for them, if I can.

Corporations need profits for shareholders, that means lower costs, that affect salaries. So, both profits and costs are paid by average people! Something not right! And increasing!
