Pretty bad if the only way to bring in money to governments is to bring in students that are rorting the system. But this is not an overnight thing. So successive goats have enabled , I suppose

They have, so many overstayers who lobbed in on these study visas so many in search of an Aussie to marry.

I went to @OfficialUoM . Europeans had to prove C1 level English. I had to do the CAE @CambridgeEng south East Asians and Chinese didn't, many without a basic command of English. If you pay more, all standards are dropped.

.....well....yes....obviously. you don't 'spit out' all those students at a true high standard....lowers the standard for all students, as they can't afford to fail too many full fee paying students

Australia has the most educated cleaning, warehouse, courier & dishwashing workforce in the world. Sadly many never move on once they get their PR

Yes. This has corrupted the universities as well as the visa system. John Howard’s theory that his parents’ servo was the be-all. However, I think it has shaken our universities awake - they’re no longer a sinecure for lazy smart people like a mediaeval abbey.

Also, as I recall, the commercialisation if universities began before a Howard was PM.
