Unfortunately, I was not able to get back within 8 years. Every time I tried, I was told I had been out too long. When I finally got hired at 14 years out, those supplements were not available for me. There are the grants for “young researchers”, but am too old for those.

It's super bittersweet when programs come out long after you needed them. On the one hand, you feel the grief that you had to survive without. On the other hand, you're so happy things are getting easier for later generations.

I took 6 years off unexpectedly when my second child was born with a major heart defect (I was a postdoc). A reentry supplement (NIAID) is what got me back to science (and I now have my own lab at UCSF). Rescued my career.

I actually recently did one of these in my lab, I think it is a great mechanism.

I didn’t have any idea this program existed. I had to take ~1yr off due to medical leave. The NIH (NIAMS) was amazing allowing me to start part time and build up to full time.

I’d love to see how frequently this is used. I’m thinking about the logistics of the two sides finding each other and are there ways to make it simpler.
