Clearly a massive loss to the city and the local community. Colleagues in #History made great contributions to local culture, including @sarah_hellawell fantastic work on #Sunderland's first female MP, or @Delph_Doucet's many public lectures on local-borne John Lilburne.

Not to mention the longstanding work on local mining communities, including the archives of the
@DurhamMiners.#Sunderland was one of the few places were this import bit of#NorthEast#History was taught. That's all about to go now.Prikaži ovu nit -
It's always been a small programme which served local students, many of whom were the first in their families to go to university. Colleagues did an exceptional job to create educational opportunities and offered exceptional support for mature and working-class students.

Now there will be no opportunities for local students to engage with their past, nor their political present, not to mention to shape their international outlook by learning a foreign language. Sad times, indeed!

Obviously, the irony the university campus is just opposite Monkwearmouth Priory, where the "Father of English History", the Venerable Bede, resided is not lost on the Twitterati here.

Dismal news, Andre -- parallels what's going on in some US state universities. Are they in part casualties of what's going on elsewhere in HE, i.e. unconstrained growth of bigger/"better" departments like our old one? They've got Newcastle, Northumbria, Teesside to compete w too.
-
Interestingly, many students were not in the catchment area of Northumbria, NCL or Durham. Students were very local from Sunderland and the County Durham coast. Sounds hard but for many Sunderland was the only option to study because of travel costs and costs of living.

Whilst I agree, the cost of a university education now is akin to a mortgage. It is mind boggling how expensive it has become and there is a duty to ensure that students have a reasonable expectation of being able to pay it back.
-
It is actually not. It is more like a tax that you pay back in small bits, if you earn above £25k after you graduated. If you don't earn, you don't pay. Nothing like a mortgage where you lose your home, if you can't pay no matter what your situation is.

Such sad, sad news. What a loss for the city, region & local population. As you say, they’ve done so much over the years to support & encourage local students & engage with the region’s history. A great team that I’m proud to have once been a part of!
-
Same here, I am very proud of what achieved as a team when I was there. Really heartbreaking to see how quickly this is apparently sacrificed.
