  2. As much as we enjoy watching the withering humiliation of Trump today, remember: It is important that the entire world see every detail of it, and laugh at him, and see the laughter. In Brazil, Philippines, Hungary, Russia, this little man’s impotence is a democratic instrument

  4. You know, on this date in 2020, the great majority of Democrats were certain Bush had lost the election, even though Gore had conceded on Dec. 13th. They were more correct than the Trumpites are now—Gore got more votes and arguably won—but by Jan. 21 most had come around to it

  6. There's really a triple accomplishment: - We got a vaccine within a few weeks (the science part was finished in March, after the virus was sequenced in January) - They thoroughly tested it in a few months - Countries are mobilizing to deliver it to a majority over a few months

  12. So if you’re from Toronto or Mumbai or Shanghai or NYC you tend always to know where you are, compass-wise, in that city. But in Berlin or London or Beijing you’re often unsure. Does that correspond to your experience?

  13. An unproven theory of mine is that people from a city on a large body of water have an innate sense of direction because you always know where North, East etc are with reference to that thing, whereas places on eg meandering rivers (London!) don’t confer that sense of direction

The fact that residential streets generally don’t have shops on them — only on adjoining main streets — is a huge flaw that people have become acutely aware of during the pandemic. This lone one’s at the end of my street. In 1940 there were a dozen on the block

The German COVID restrictions in March-April, in most places other than Bavaria, basically turned every restaurant, shop, convenience store and newsstand into a sidewalk cocktail bar, and walking around drinking became a form of public health. So this will be a big change

2016 is finally coming to an end, but it’s a messy end. The more they disgrace themselves in the final period, the less likely their kind will ever return
