At midnight, the British people will suffer a profound loss of sovereignty. This won’t be felt fully for 11 months, when their loss of control over so many things that govern their lives will be more tangible. Autonomy comes from building links, not from building wallshttps://twitter.com/joncstone/status/1222928005141532677 …

Here's my column on the meaning of sovereignty in the modern world, and why Britain's autonomy and self-determination will decline. (And why those nations and provinces of Britain that didn't support Brexit will suffer an even greater loss of sovereignty)https://www.theglobeandmail.com/opinion/article-brexit-is-done-and-now-britain-is-less-free-and-independent/ …

However, as I chronicled last year, Brexit has been a triumph of smart and disciplined negotiating skills. Just not on Britain's part. Brussels has turned this into a guarantee that no country will want to try this https://www.theglobeandmail.com/opinion/article-brexit-is-done-and-now-britain-is-less-free-and-independent/ …pic.twitter.com/okFnX2987O

And as @philipstephens notes today, Britain's loss of autonomy and self-determination means that the only alternative to EU-without-a-vote will be a profound level of dependence on the United States, one that Boris has shown he is wary to stomachhttps://www.ft.com/content/e6323034-42a4-11ea-a43a-c4b328d9061c …

A big reason why Brexit negotiations are bogging down -- Britain is now governed by cosmopolitan "anywheres" who have their own privately financed links to the world and do not depend on international institutions and trade for their livelihoodshttps://twitter.com/DougSaunders/status/1191278063818018817 …

I wrote about this phenomenon -- the Brexit movement and other nationalist organizations being comprised of cosmopolitan "anywheres" for whom citizenship is not important -- earlier this year https://www.theglobeandmail.com/opinion/article-the-posh-cosmopolitanism-of-brexit-finally-shows-its-face/ … pic.twitter.com/eUAbDrSBe3

And as a Quebecer I keep wondering if there's some domino effect reviving the independence movement here, if that happens. Maybe not just that. But that would be a key piece in the puzzle, if combined w/ some homegrown new tension, which never seems far off.

They had plenty of time to turn things around and managed to double down in the last election. Entirety self-inflicted, but sad for those opposing.
