    1. Internet Disruption Report‏ @InternetDsrptns 9 Jun 2019

#Internet in #Syria completely shut down between 01:00-05:30 UTC today, likely related to first day of 12th Grade (A-Level) public exams. #Outage visible in @InternetIntel amnd @caida_ioda tools. #KeepItOn https://twitter.com/ahmadalissa/status/1137486185343922178 …pic.twitter.com/Lh02qGqyUv

Today, as well as in 2017 and 2018 shutdowns, the disconnection time frame is precisely from 4am to 8.30am local time. @caida_ioda Darknet signal with 1min granularity clearly shows that for all years, suggesting shutdown automation. #KeepItOn #Syria https://ioda.caida.org/ioda/dashboard#lastView=overview&view=inspect&entity=country/SY&from=1560014400&until=1560063300 …pic.twitter.com/1vLNAKGzsK

Interesting! What does this mean? Do you know more about the technique behind the #internetshutdowns? Does this point to a coordinated effort of ISPs in #Syria? Did you observe similar patterns elsewhere? Why is Active Probing by @InternetDsrptns different from @caida_ioda?Thanks

Yes, the Syrian internet blackouts are implemented through a configuration change at Syrian Telecom (formerly STE). They simply stop announcing their BGP routes to the outside world and that prevents traffic from reaching Syria.

Since they don't modify the routing for outbound traffic, we observe a surge in DNS queries as computers in Syria repeatedly try in vain to resolve domains - the responses are sent by DNS operators but never arrive, so they retry and retry. https://map.internetintel.oracle.com/?root=national&country=SY …pic.twitter.com/BMvhQlUU8N

At first look it appears the outbound traffic is also affected: see red line in graph showing Darknet traffic dropping for Syrian Telecom. But to get a better sense of it we would have to look at the actual packets captured at the Darknet. https://ioda.caida.org/ioda/dashboard#from=1560009120&until=1560068700&view=inspect&entity=asn/29256&lastView=overview …pic.twitter.com/XvoDQmUF7M
