al-Zawahiri was a real historic level monster - the Luxor massacre is enough to cement that but he was also a major planner behind 9/11 - but all of that stuff feels bizarrely distant. Yeah he died, but as the US collapses Al Qaeda looks to have won in the long run.

I know this is stating the obvious but Covid really is no joke for immunocompromised people. Even this mild case has stayed in my system for almost 3 weeks now.
I didn't get my first negative home test until this morning.

A white supremacist shot 13 and killed 10 in a terrorist attack mass shooting at a grocery store in Buffalo, New York.
The suspect, who legally acquired a firearm despite previously threatening acts of mass violence, was from a suburb of Binghamton, more than three hours away.

Look I think it’s clear I love a multiverse movie, but maybe people went to see this film less for its multiverse-ness and more for the innovative, wild, exciting filmmaking & the under-told immigrant family story & that word of mouth was that it was good?

If OBI WAN is a good show, I feel like no one will be excited for the Cassian Andor show. The hype levels won’t be comparable.
It's days like these that remind me why I have notifications on for OJ Simpson tweets.

The sky tears asunder in purple swirls. The end of times is here. In angry tears I turn to DJ Khaled. "Where's your catchphrase huh?! Come on, say it. Say 'Another one' when you know there's no tomorrow, you fool!"
The ground quivers. He looks at me serenely. "WE THE BEST MUS--"

This is honestly the biggest thing we should take away from this Oscars. If the show is just well-produced & inclusive of all categories, that’s the best they can hope for.

The 94th Academy Awards still ran longer than the past three ceremonies. No need to ever try the cut categories stunt ever again.
Like many of us, I'm frustrated watching The Academy prioritize ratings & popularity over everything else. It goes against their own mission, and seems to be all about greed anyway. The number of people watching the show shouldn't matter, the filmmakers & craftspeople should.

In the same way a memoir is not exactly a biography, I have a hard time calling these documentaries. I feel like we need a word to distinguish first-person pieces like this from non-fiction films that have more inherent objectivity.

People who don't like musicals will never, ever get tired of telling you they don't like musicals. It's the weirdest form of cultural self-credentialing and I don't know what to say to it except

I refuse to believe anyone over the age of 15 actually believes this most recent Spider-Man should win an Academy Award for best picture. I get that it is fun to say wacky shit online for a reaction, but for God's sake, people, get AHOLD of yourselves.

Also, kicking the editing and sound awards to before the telecast and then saying to your own editing and sound people, "Make it look good, okay? We'll give you an hour" is a pretty breathtaking statement.

Few things are as infectious as people who love something celebrating the best of it. The only thing the Oscars have to do is unabashedly love cinema and I promise they will bounce back.

Spielberg and Scorsese know what makes a great film. So does everyone else within the voting body--all the way down to the least recognizable name. They should embrace that. Make a show that reflects that.

The Academy is made up of the world's greatest artists in cinema. The only thing they will ever truly care about is great cinema. That's the only thing anyone else should care about in regards to awards in cinema.

To cut the editing and sound awards (on top of all the other cut categories) from the show is utterly insane. Those skills are what help define filmmaking and set it apart from every other art form. It'd be like cutting "Outstanding Comedy Series" from the Emmys.

The Oscars have no reason to be relevant--that giant museum aside--so to put so much effort into it is self-sabotage.

Giving SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME a Best Picture nom doesn't serve any person, the industry, or the award show. The people who love that movie couldn't care less if it gets nominated for anything and it will only diminish what is left of the award's prestige to give it a handout.

In reality, the number one movie of the year has very often been the broader film since the beginning, but the days of RETURN OF THE KING, TITANIC, RAIN MAN, THE GODFATHER, etc. being huge financial successes is passed us for the time being.

The mainstream appetite will always ebb and flow. The concept of the ambitious, narrative-rich movie also being the $1b movie of the year is not the phase we're in right now. and those who love cinema need to get a grip on that and just accept it.

A populist Oscar show is a band-aid on the bigger issue: mainstream sensibilities have shifted. The distance between the "good" movies and the financially successful ones has gotten extra wide, but that's ok.

The one way the Awards can be relevant again is for them to stop trying to be relevant. Pandering or attempting to make the show "more palatable" will only alienate the cinephiles while also creating a vapid show that the layperson also won't be interested in.

Would Netflix buy Universal? Would it even be advantageous for them?
Walt Disney said he was going to build a city and then died, and his company freaked out for a decade on what to do about it. The lesson? When you're on your way out, say some stuff. Make some big promises. Throw out some weird ideas. Closure doesn't exist. Leave behind chaos.
