The absolute dumbest part of this is that there absolutely are conspiracy theories on the left, and there probably are people who take legitimate grievances against powerful wealthy people into conspiracy territory.

But if you wanted to make a point about conspiracy theories on the left, you could very easily have said “Putin” instead of the Kochs and “Russian bots” instead of the 1%.

The problem is that that particular conspiracy theory is popular among the center-left, so citing it wouldn’t allow Silicon Valley capitalist Brian Dunning to take potshots at the anti-capitalist left who support policies that would threaten his wealth.

See, when warning people that their political leanings don’t inoculate them against conspiratorial thinking, don’t forget that your own political beliefs might lead you to make bad arguments. Especially if that’s happened multiple times in the past.
