I’ve accepted yesterday’s outcome but I still feel the need to push back at sketchy counterfactuals and revisionist told-you-sos. We should at least attempt an accurate account of events.

Nobody thought May’s deal was a soft Brexit except Farage and the ERG. It’s very hard to look back on last March and think, oh, what a missed opportunity, I would be so much happier if that had gone through.

Didn't Peter Foster of the Telegraph push a similar view when he was in Remainiacs? The idea that we had the option of May's deal which was the softest we'd get and rejected it and end up with something harder. No Single Market and no Customs Union makes it not remotely soft.

Yes I wasn’t hosting that week but I disagreed with him.

May's deal felt pretty hard line to me, as a Brit in France. For us, Johnson's deal is no different in terms of rights.

It wasn’t soft but it was softer. And potentially - by default rather than design - much softer.

Was the point not that May's deal would steered the UK towards a softer Brexit as a means to avoid the backstop.

They seem to have perfect 2020 hindsight and a sprinkling of retcon about them. I distinctly remember not being given a second option as to the form of Brexit I’d accept and Parliament was given only take it or leave votes by Government.

I think the article makes a different point: not that brexit would inevitably happen after the ref result, but that it *should* happen, because only then parliament is accountable for it . Once parliament owns it normal democracy is restored

There is far too much revisionism going on. May’s red lines = hard brexit.
