Yourself, who like another person is constantly surprising you as to who it is becoming and what it wants from life. You always meet the new you in the mirror in the form of a stranger. And you always turn away from that stranger to begin with. --David Whyte

"avoid the negative ... there is almost always a positive and constructive way to reframe your potential contribution.  This also will force you to keep on thinking harder"

Consider the ballooning volume of knowledge and the immediate availability of info — it's neither surprising nor worrisome that, apparently, our "attention spans are shortening." Info is condensed & customized into applicable knowledge; we're impatient with time-consuming fluff.

An outstanding return of a refreshed w/ new host . Insightful analysis about political response to bushfire crisis by the panel. A thoroughly researched and expertly executed interview with the Treasurer. Increased use of historical quotes is powerful.

Yet instead of doing what would be fun, and thereby maybe solving stuff, people do what they're told they 'must', or what they think they 'should'.

I don't think this pattern of the mind is responsible for partisan thinking, I suggest it *is* partisan thinking.

These ideas are a response to a friend asking what is the point of writing an opinion piece that is actually not your opinion? After seeing sharing the news of this Sokal styled hoax.

I guess satire is poking fun (criticising) at this error in the human condition?

It's because we are bad at conceiving other people hold a set of relevant values in a different priority order than we do.

There's a paradox with good satire. Both sides of the political dispute find it funny because it is a good criticism of the opposing position. Yet neither realises the other side also finds it funny.

I dunno. It self-corrects a LOT faster than the old system.

Is it time for a renaissance of real citizen science? Where robust methods and rational critical discussion ventures outside the academy again?

Has scientific peer review created a false public understanding that all scientific findings *should* be trusted? Does it help explain why people are surprised that some scientists dissent on aspects of climate science?

Does this imply one who has only a small set of core principles cannot be loyal nor expect loyalty? If so, it is false. Loyalty grows from kindness and demonstrating trustworthiness. Both are possible despite disagreeing on matters of politics and morality.

Yes, Hobbes shows impatience. The consequences of reasoned argument are only sometimes noticed immediately. We are not impervious to reason.

"So, what you are saying is ..." is often received as a straw man tactic. Instead try "Does that imply ..."

Add rhetoric that creates a false dichotomy that is toxic, evil and bigotted to be on the "incorrect" side of. E.g. social justice, *phobic, pro-life, un-Australian.

It bears repeating: in order for humanity's understanding of the world to become incrementally more correct, individuals have to be free to be wrong.
