According to 's media use & attitudes report; - 0% of people over 45 have done any VR gaming - 0% of women have done any VR gaming - People in A and B socioeconomic groups are twice as likely to have done VR gaming then C1, C2, D and E. 😢

./ collect and store data that no other headset does. This is why- If you work at Oculus, don't tell me you just work on VR... you work on data collection. THIS IS THE ONLY REASON FACEBOOK FUNDS VR.

Was recommended that I do some “mindfulness/meditation” so I started to look into some of the apps. The privacy policies are, quite frankly, terrifying (and not exactly helping me right now). I looked at 7 of the most recommended “mindfulness” apps on iOS… (Thread.)

  6. As a guy who worked with the development of early flight simulators and who lived to see both Helig's Sensorama and Sutherland's Sword of Damocles, he sure as hell went out of his way to ignore VR, whose persistent perceptual illusions would've wreaked havoc for his theories.

  7. Naturally, all the ecological and embodied stuff is great, but Gibson's commitment to naïve realism seems, to me, at least, perplexingly self-evident, even if the connection between his own theory/ies and that particular philosophical position and is never explicitly made.

  12. I'm still undecided, and the more I ponder the book, the more I think Gibson was a slippery rhetorician (and at times a bad communicator, too) who arguably chose to ignore counterexamples (e.g. certain illusions). But FWIW, here follow the most telling quotes from the book, IMO:

  15. Was J. J. Gibson _really_ a naïve realist? (As in philosophy of mind.) He certainly rejects constructivism. I've heard folks argue that, no, he only insists our perception of _affordances_ is "direct". "Direct" how? Anyway, I'll be back once I've gone over my notes a few times.

For those who have been following this story and are surprised by how it turned out, I noticed this person uses identity affirmation, a technique in social psychology, to anchor the conversation so that the parent is capable of changing her mind:

I love how we've "fixed" VR by progressively: - adding guns - focusing on game'y games - introduced heavy curation - curated for long, highly polished traditional gameplay that meets consumer expectations WHAT A WIDE OPEN FRONTIER. WHAT A BOLD VISION FOR WHAT THE TECH CAN BEEEE
