Ever wonder why baked normal maps just don't look quite right in Unity? I did, so I decided to find out why.

GPU Gems in 2004 had this article which I recall showing me, however the techniques aren't post-process.

Is it really thought that the 2007 paper was the first real-time SSS approach? I know myself and others were doing it many years before. This one's from 2003 using SH, that also had a good thickness approximation - source is in the same github repo.

Neat little video. I did the procedural virtual texturing for this and you can see from the video the enormity of the challenge. Even got it running beautifully on the slower Intel GPUs of the time. Good fun :)

I wrote this last month when I needed something super-quick. It's awful. Terrible. I have no regrets. But it just bit me and I had to write a proper solution. It's all better now.

It's hard not to feel an overwhelming sense of sadness today. It's easy to get worked up about my own situation but I can't imagine the sense of loss felt by many in the UK, especially for their children. Focus on what makes the UK good. You'll be back.

Does anybody know of any matcap-style PBR textures? I know the premise is that the reflection properties are "baked in" but I think a PBR equivalent would look quite nice. I can't find any on the typical paid-for texture services.

I don't know how my code is working. I, just... this is insane. Months of "oh my god dreading that task" turning into "it's making me uncomfortable how easy this is becoming"

You know a project's doing well when you see some Quixel shots and think, bloody hell, that's a great new Dreams model!

Sometimes having visible LOD transitions serves as a good reminder as to some of the crazy-this-shouldn't-work-style lengths you go to to keep input latency low.

This has been such an unusual week. Lots of very slow thinking and about 40% code. But I'm solving so many of the big new problems so fast. Having a ship date in mind definitely sharpens the mind; the Yak is happily sitting hairy in the corner.
