_nobody_ has a 12-bit monitor, everybody just dithers down to 10 or 8 you record in a higher sample depth to give more room for error in compression and editing (same reason you would want to record audio at >48kHz for music mastering when you distribute at 44.1)

Really depends on how much you need. WD's got a lot of dual-drive (redundancy!) USB-C models that ought to be a big improvement over laptop internal storage, and then there's Pegasus and Drobo's TB3
