I think this is a good example of how putting yourself out there and TRYING trumps pure skill that you don't do anything with. The biggest barrier to making it is not attempting something in the first place. Could try to fault them but hey, they published a book and I haven't.
It's said they were recently featured as the main artist in a minor film called 'Your Name'.
