is the camera audio in sync with the video, and the mic audio drifts? How quickly does the drift occur? (i.e. after N seconds, how far out of sync is it?)

one possible cause is that QuickTime could've dropped audio frames somewhere (yes, audio is stored in frames just like video, though they're usually shorter), which would mean non-constant drift which would be harder to fix (would have to track down where it happened)
Thank you very much for the detailed feedback! Will try adjusting in FCPX and see how it works! I wonder if it would be possible to record a blue yeti into a zoom h6?

I don't know of any dedicated recorders for USB mics, most gear is for XLR the Zoom H series has very good built-in mics as well, though of course they won't be the optimal type for all use cases

but if you want to stick to your existing mic setup, there's plenty of good recording software out there that ought to work fine as long as you keep the computer largely otherwise-idle when recording
