Actually even native Japanese often say those vowels in such an unclear way. I’m not so sure, but this is said to be because Japanese words can be recognised if you don’t open your mouth as you do when you speak other language such as English.

Native Japanese speakers tend to centralize their vowels, rather than reduce them. Slightly different phenomenon, but can make a big difference in terms of pronunciation—this is why it’s best to teach most Japanese learners to say the vowels clearly.
