Ngl it's super weird for me, I can go to Japan and understand something live a lot better than a recording for some reason, if it were recorded and I played it back I wouldn't understand it all

This actually makes sense (at least to me lol) - I assume you have more context for what you're hearing (even if you don't understand every word), which will always be easier than just a random line of audio in isolation, especially in a language with so many homophones.
