Just came back from a few weeks in the UK - utterly shocked to find that 1-in-4 people I spoke to thought Hong Kong was in Japan. “I saw those riots they’ve been having on the news!” It destroyed my perception that British people have a decent general knowledge of geography.

I think the problem is that those people probably think Hong Kong is part of "nice" Asia, like Japan and South Korea, and not "not-nice" Asia, where China is just a massive pollution smoghole.
